Hi, Sean -

I'm using your code for 2D simplex noise in JavaScript and trying to get it to reproduce something like the image you have posted above. I can get noise, but it is very pixelated, with none of the larger scale features you have above.

All I am doing is creating a blank image data, setting each pixel to rgba(255,0,0,1.0), and running each pixel through the noise function. I set noise = (noise+1)/2 to bring it back to a [0,1] range and multiply it by the r channel and the alpha channel.

Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. Would you be willing to share the code you used to generate the simplex photo? I'm happy to share my own, but won't poison your blog with it unasked.

I wouldn't use ape-project or my code again.

What I did to type it faster was to create a TextMate snippet triggered by CMD+\, which is the same shortcut used in DrRacket, and which also resembles the way lambda functions are written in Haskell.

@rooster 808: If the connection.write() method is blocking, then yes, it's a huge bottleneck. I think in this case it's async though, which means your overhead is a 10,000 item for-loop which is basically instantaneous on modern hardware. Hmm. Though you'd still have 10,000 copies of the written data (one byte array per server connection), but you could optimize that by sharing a single output byte array with multiple write counter positions (one counter per server connection). And free up the write buffer once the last writer is done.

If you wanted to do like 10MM clients then perhaps you'd want to shard the websocket server connections over multiple machines, and have some kind of ipv6 multicast backchannel for the servers to broadcast updates to eachother (and then to their respective clients). Frankly I haven't given much thought to that particular problem but it's certainly a great question.
